It's leaf peeping, apple eating, pumpkin carving time in New England! It's leaf peeping, apple eating, pumpkin carving time in New England!

The blue skies, cool breezes and the blazing colors of potted Mums everywhere have cured me of any lingering disappointment that summer has once again come to its annual close. Autumn is that time of year when I'm most drawn to be in the great outdoors with my dogs. There are the beautiful drives north to New Hampshire and Vermont, long hikes through woodlands alive with color, and the thrill of enjoying it all without mosquitoes!

Then there are those sweet, leg weary drives home, stopping along the way for fresh apple cider and assorted New England home grown apples just waiting to be turned into pies.

If you are a native New Englander, this has probably long been a yearly ritual for you. If you are not a native New Englander, now is your chance to live like one!
But hold on for just a second... whether a quick walk somewhere beautiful nearby or a day hike farther away from home, before you head out the door you want to take a few steps to be prepared. Sierra Club has a great list of suggestions to help you enjoy successful and safe hiking with your four legged companions.

One last thought... even though mosquitoes are not so active at this time of year, ticks aren't yet asleep for the winter so click here for some very useful information about dogs and ticks!

Now you're prepared, what are you waiting for? Fill the tank, grab that map and get going!

Be healthy, stay well!
